[USKYMIX002] DUBGYMNER – “Exclusive Dubplate Mix”
Dubgymner is the name of two talanted young men from Okinawa of Japan. Dj Mondo and Aron, combine their masterskills in djing, sampling, engineering and production to create a perfect result of pure ancient roots dub. We had a few words with Mondo :
UNERSKY (1) : You guys are consisting of two members, both of you are
pioneers in djing and engineering, what caused this collab?
MONDO(M) :
DUBGYMER is consisting of MONDO and Aron as a Track Making unit. I had been talking with Aron about making tracks back in years but it did not go forward as we liked to be. I, myself, was being chased by organizing DUB STEP Party, “bud ryukyu”(http://budryukyu.blogspot.com/
), and did a lot of djing in 2011. In this year, we agreed to make tracks and our minds came together. Now, we are arranging Aron’s abstract style into flow of the unique club music and changing beats.
Thus, we think that it is now being well balanced work. We are still in progress, and I believe we will evolve even more.
2. Okinawa has probably one of the best underground electronic
music scenes in Japan, what do you think that helped this?
M
Okinawa was under the Vietnam War involving many American bases which influenced the island by various American culture such as Disco,Rock culture and club culture. Because of the influence, many outstanding Disco Djs were born who were pioneering Club Culture, or training to be the ones. These Senpai’s (Older Masters) are really respectable.
Furthermore, Okinawan’s eyes went outside of the American culture as well, such as UK underground, Acid Jazz and Techno. The movement was natural and the isolated Okinawan Island had a little information of outside, but started having own unique original development. It is
often said that “the current of Tokyo will come into Okianawa 5years later”. It might be old saying now because of internet, but it is partially true. However, I can say this, “We should grow the music scenes in long term and not to be swayed by the pop current too much”.
In nowadays, many outstanding DJs started moving into Okianwa making collab scenes better and fun. You should come visit Okianwa!! Lol
3. What your goals are and what mostly inspires your music?
M
Since the influence of my father who was in a band, my roots of music varies from Jazz, Blues,Fusion,Rock, and Hard Rock. Later years, I intended to listen to Hard Rock,Metal, and HardCore. Even now, those influences have impact on my Djing style and track makings. I actually started listen to club music recently and there are a lot of music that I have never listened. Anyhow, I have been listening to music
since my younger age. The interesting point of music is there is always new discovery. In that sense, there seems to be no goals in music lol
I believe that it is really honorable for music makers to
be around with making new music and listening to world’s music. I really want to show the respect to people who opened up/pioneered their own paths in any genres.
4. DJ Mondo has also worked with Undersky for some time, what you think of Undersky, which artists represent your taste the most?
M
The fact, that the members of Undersky are young, has its own big potential. Also, the quality is astonishingly getting higher within this year. New Artists are born and new releases are released. I am always shocked by this production. And, it really DOPE SHIT„, is it because of the atmosphere of the land? I have been interested in Greek
culture and history, so I am so happy to relate to that. I want to release DUBGTMNER from Undersky, and my goal is to meet Greek brothers in DUBGYMNER live. I would like to go there as “MONDO” too.
